Amanda Grey

Amanda is an Art Lawyer and Senior Partner at Mishcon de Reya in London. She has been involved with the Sixteen Trust since it began, and is involved with mentoring young people in schools across the South East as part of our program.

What made you want to go into your career path?

I came across art law by chance and it seemed a perfect fit.

Did you always think you’d go into this career? How does it compare to how you thought it would be?

No, I thought I would either be an artist or a producer. I was not aware of  art law as a specialism until much later on in my career.

Art law is far more diverse than lots of people understand- it can involve advising a client with due diligence on a collection of antiquities, or helping an art dealer find a commercial solution to a dispute with an artist. No two days are the same.

How was life at school?

Great- fun, interesting. I liked the variety of work and subjects.

What do you enjoy most about it?

The range of work, unravelling complex disputes,  the clients, the art and working with a great team. One of the highlights is seeing the artwork at the centre of our cases- it is always a real privilege.

What are your ambitions?

To keep building on what we have achieved here, and develop the next generation of art lawyers.

Tell us a fun story about your work

I was given a voodoo doll in court on one matter, I ended up chasing the person delivering it through the court building. It brought us luck on subsequent hearings.
